Good oral hygiene practices are an essential aspect of your child’s overall well-being. Parents should start brushing their child’s teeth as soon as teeth start erupting. In the child’s mouth, tooth decay can happen even if there is just one tooth. The parenting dental tips are important for parents to practise and maintain good oral hygiene during childhood. Here are some parenting tips for parents to keep their child teeth and gums healthy.
Make a habit:
If brushing is merely an instruction, children will try to find a way to get out of it. Make brushing fun! Kids always love to imitate their parents, so use the opportunity to teach them. Play a game with your kid, where they follow what you do. It’s like a monkey-see, monkey-do when you start brushing your teeth, they imitate to do – and so on until it’s time to rinse and spit.
Amuse them to make it a habit, by creating stories on chasing and seizing germs with the toothbrush. Practicing them to stand before the mirror and brush the teeth is a good practice.
Educate your child about oral health – Essential practice
- Reduce or avoid sweetened food like chocolates, sweets, sweet drinks and food.
- Teach them to brush twice a day with a soft bristle brush. Children usually tend to miss out hard to reach edges. Those are the most critical areas to pay attention.
- From the age of 4 onwards, use dental products like floss or an interdental brush.
- When the child is capable of gargling and spitting, start on with a diluted amount or mouth gargle.
- For every six months make a dental appointment for a professional cleaning.
Gums get sore when your child starts teething. It can irritate your child, so gums need to be clean daily. To clean your gums use a soft cloth, dip it in water and gently rub over the gums to clean it.
Selection of brush:
Brush selection is done wisely for your kid. As the first teeth come out use a soft brush for cleaning. It is recommended to select the brush that has the soft-edged tip. Teach your kid to brush every side of the teeth at least 2 mins.
Choice of toothpaste:
Use fluoride-free toothpaste, for kids under age 3. You can use toothpaste with little fluoride once your kid turns 3. As the child grows up the amount of fluoride should be increased. Fluoride resists bacteria and helps the teeth grow stronger. To get your child ready for brushing you can try various flavours and make a habit for your child to brush up on their own.
As your kid turns 2, children develop a good set of teeth. When they grow up, the gaps between teeth start disappearing and teach them the process of flossing. Flossing is not taken seriously, but it is very crucial and it is a good habit for your child to floss on his own after growing up.
For proper oral hygiene, food intake has to be supervised regularly. Monitor the food and teach them to avoid large intake of high sugar content food. Make the habit of brushing twice, the food stuck between teeth has the potential to damage the teeth overnight. Before going to sleep, recommend them to consume only water.
Children always won’t care about oral hygiene, so as a parent you should develop gentle oral care habits for the well-being of your child’s health. If they grow, they will maintain these habits. Proper check-up has to be done before your child turns 2. For your child’s happy teeth, simply keep in check with the dentist.
